A Comedic Voyage through Time and Space
Words by Cameron Lowe
Has any sci-fi fan ever imagined The Doctor, Captain Kirk, and Doctor Zachary Smith meeting up? If you have, imagine it no longer, for DamnitLeanne has the answer for you with their Adelaide Fringe show: Doctor Trek in Space.
Doctor Trek in Space is a comedy improv show that mashes together three popular 1960s sci-fi TV shows: Doctor Who, Star Trek, and Lost in Space. Throughout its 55-minute running time, you will be treated to a mash up of these three shows with all their quirks, from the overdramatising to the low budget look and feel.
Chatting with performer/writer/producer Aaron Finan, he said that Doctor Trek in Space will not be a re-enactment of anything from the shows, instead being something new. Finan, who plays Captain Kirk in this performance, also said that he and the other performers are instead only capturing the essence of the characters. Capturing the essence of an existing character is a part of the DamnitLeanne way. Finan is a former Flinders student, having studied a Bachelor of Media Arts.
The other creators/performers of the show include Josh Rice and Amy Sincock, who play Doctor Smith and The Doctor respectively. Along with Finan, Rice and Sincock were inspired to create Doctor Trek in Space because the three of them are all massive sci-fi fans. Rice, who wrote the first act, is a fan of Lost in Space, which will be reflected upon to the audience. Sincock wrote the second act, which will follow a more Doctor Who style of storytelling. Finan, a fan of Star Trek, wrote the last third and gives it a conclusion that evokes Star Trek. Other performers will appear each night during the show’s run to play The Robot from Lost in Space, and an alien.
Doctor Trek in Space is the third performance by DamnitLeanne that is an improv of a popular film/TV series. Previous shows have included improvs of Law and Order and Indiana Jones, titled Law and Disorder, and Gindiana Bones and the ___ of ___ respectively. It is also one of their two shows in the 2018 Fringe, with The Earliest Breakfast Game Show being their other show.
