“Creativity” Competition: T&Cs

We’re running a competition for our third edition of Empire Times, the “Creativity” issue. For your chance to win one of six prizes, submit a creative piece in one of the three categories: writing, photography, or artwork!


1.0 Conditions of Entry

There is no entry fee for this Competition.
Submission Opening Date: 23rd Feb 2015
Submission Closing Date: 9th March 2015

All entrants to the Competition must be a currently enrolled student of Flinders University at the closing date. Collaborative pieces are not eligible for the Competition.

All entries submitted to the Competition will be considered for publication by Empire Times, in either print or digital format, in 2015. All entries may be used for marketing and publicity in conjunction with Empire Times. In submitting their entries for publication, entrants indicate their consent to these initiatives.

Entrants may remove a submission if a request in writing is provided via mail or email prior to the closing date.

Please note that if the Terms and Conditions are not met, no staff member of FUSA or Empire Times is obligated to notify entrants that their submission is not eligible for consideration. Any entry not meeting the Terms and Conditions will be removed from the entry pool prior to judging.

Please not that pieces will not be edited prior to the winning piece being selected.

2.0 Entry Requirements

Entries must be emailed to empire.times@flinders.edu.au
Entries must have a subject of “Submission to Creativity Competition”
Entries must include in the body of the email the student name, student number and contact phone number
Entries must include in the body of the email the following statement: “I have read the Empire Times Creativity Competition Terms and Conditions and I agree to them. I wish to submit this piece for entry in the Competition.”
No other information should be provided in the email body.
Submission must be attached to email.

Submissions must:

Be provided in .doc or .docx format, or TIFF/PNG/JPG format
If written, be in Times New Roman font, size 12
Not have any identifying information present in the submission file
Meet the requirements for submission in Section 3
Be unpublished
Be an original piece

3.0 Explanation of Terms

This Competition has three categories. You may submit to each of the categories, but only one submission per student per category will be accepted.

“Writing” includes: short-story fiction, short-story non-fiction, and poetry.

Short-story pieces should be between 1000 and 3000 words.
Poetry pieces should be between 50 and 200 words.
These word-counts are non-negotiable.

“Photograph” includes: Any photography piece taken by a student. Images must be high-res 300dpi and submitted as TIFF, PNG or JPG. If photograph is non-digital, a scanned image of abovementioned quality must be provided.

“Artwork” includes: Any piece of artwork produced by a student. If artwork is non-digital, entrant must provide a scanned copy of the artwork piece. All submissions must be high-res 300dpi and submitted as TIFF, PNG or JPG.

“Unpublished” means: The piece must not have been published elsewhere. This includes but is not limited to: formal publication, online publication, blog-entries, available on any Internet website, or uploaded to any social-media platform.

“Original” means: The piece must be entirely your own work. It cannot be a derivative piece (for example, fan-fiction or fan-art). You cannot submit a piece on behalf of another person.

4.0 Removal of Submission from Competition

If an entrant would like to remove their submission from the Competition, they must submit a request in writing, which must be received by the Editors prior to the closing date. This must be submitted via email to empire.times@flinders.edu.au. We suggest including a read-receipt request.

Please note that if you remove your submission from the Competition, you will not be eligible to re-enter that piece or any derivative piece.

5.0 Determination of a Winner

Winners are decided by panel decision.

All entries will have identifying data removed prior to pieces being received by the panel, by a non-panel staff member.

Panel members may include: Editors of Empire Times, Media Officer of FUSA, Student Council Members.

6.0 Prizes

There are two prizes available in each of the categories.

“Writing Prize”
First Place: $100
Second Place: $50

“Photography Prize”
First Place: $100
Second Place: $50

“Artwork Prize”
First Place: $100
Second Place: $50

Prize is provided as a VISA card with the specified amount loaded onto it. Prize cannot be exchanged for cash, goods or services. Prize cannot be provided to any other person or organisation other than the winner.

Winner will be announced prior to the publication of Issue 3, by the 8th of April 2015.
